There were two types of latches that were used back in Colonial times. The Norfolk and Suffolk type that were most commonly used in Colonial times, the Norfolk being the more primitive of the two...with the main difference being that both ends of the Norfolk Latch's handle are fixed to a single backplate, where as the Suffolk's handle has two backplates, one at each end.
